
The question "how tall is Kebnekaise" has no stable answer, and that is not the cartographers' fault. The mountain has two summits, and one of them is shrinking.
The south peak is capped by a glacier. The north peak, roughly half a kilometre away, is bare rock. For as long as anyone has measured, the south peak was the higher one, which is why that is where everybody walked. Since 2019 that is no longer true.
The measurement made at the end of every summer
The south peak is measured annually from Tarfala Research Station, run by Stockholm University and located in the valley east of the massif. The series has run unbroken since the late 1940s.
The measurement is always made at the end of summer, and that is deliberate. By then the year's melt has gone as far as it will go, and you capture the summit at its lowest point for the year. A value measured in May would say more about the winter's snowfall than about the glacier.
The numbers
At the September 2025 measurement the south peak stood at 2,088.4 metres above sea level. That was 1.5 metres lower than the year before.
The north peak sits at 2,096.8 metres and does not move, because it is solid rock. The gap was therefore 8.4 metres in the north peak's favour, and 2025 was the seventh consecutive year in which the south peak came in lower.
Sweden still has its highest mountain. It is only the top of it that has moved a few hundred metres north.
Why the sources disagree
Look Kebnekaise up in three places and you will probably get three numbers. That is not sloppiness. It is a timeline.
Over the twentieth century the map value for the south peak fell from 2,123 to 2,111 metres and later to 2,106. A measurement in 1947 gave 2,117 metres. Every one of those figures was correct when it was written. The glacier has simply lost a little over three decimetres a year on average since then, and considerably faster over the past two decades.

The massif around the summits
Kebnekaise is not a spire but a massif. Around the two summits lie a dozen glaciers, steep cirques and valleys such as Tarfaladalen to the east.
That is also what makes the mountain hard to photograph and rewarding to build as a relief. A photograph taken from one direction shows one peak. The terrain shows the whole system: how the ridges run, where the glaciers sit, and why the western route and the eastern route are two completely different days out.
