The problem with buying a present for someone who skis a lot is that they already own everything they need, and they have strong opinions about it.
Gloves, hat, goggles, wax kit: all of it is personal and carefully chosen. That is why ski presents so often land on something generic, and why they so often end up in a cupboard.
One way around it is to stop giving something used on the hill and give something about the hill instead.
Start with the place, not the product
Everyone who skis has one resort that matters most. Often it is not the fanciest one but the first, or the one they return to every year.
Ask yourself where the person actually skis, not where they would like to. A piece of Åre for someone who has spent twenty winters there lands far harder than a piece of some prestigious mountain they have never visited.

If the resort is not in the range
It is more common than you would think for the place that matters most to be a small local hill or one specific valley. In that case you make the window yourself in FRMD by You: mark the area on the map, choose size and frame, and we come back to you within a day with a 3D model before production starts.
It is worth reading what makes a place readable in relief first. Not every area works equally well, and choosing a window is easier once you know why.
With or without the nameplate
A choice that changes how the present is received. With the nameplate, the name and height of the place are written on the piece, which makes it immediately clear even to someone who does not recognise the terrain.
Without it, the whole surface is terrain, and it becomes more of an object that happens to be a specific place. For a skier who knows their mountain by heart, that is often the more enjoyable choice.
Something smaller
If you want something small, or need a present for a whole group of friends, there is the Åre keyring. The same topography as on the wall piece, in pocket format, 3D printed in Stockholm.
Count backwards on the timing
This is the part that actually causes trouble in December, so it is worth knowing in advance.
The pieces do not sit finished on a shelf. Every one is made to order, and according to our shipping policy production takes 1-2 weeks. Delivery comes on top of that, normally around four working days within Sweden. In total we reckon on 3-20 working days from order to doorstep.
In practice that means an order at the start of December has comfortable margin, while an order a few days before Christmas does not. Shipping within Sweden is free.
If you are ordering your own window through FRMD by You, add the time it takes to go through the model together, so that route should be started earlier.
Before you order
Check which wall the piece will hang on. The square subjects measure 28 by 28 centimetres externally, which is right on a narrow wall or in a hallway but small above a sofa. How to work out the right size is in the guide to sizing.
If the present is for a cabin rather than a home, read about cabin walls first. Panelling is a completely different background from a white wall.
